Sit and rest before, during, and after shopping, meet friends, have your lunch, sit and spin or knit, enjoy a complimentary cup of coffee or tea, show off your projects or purchases--Hospitality is for you. Of course it takes a lot of people power to make something this big happen, so contact Teresa Harrison, if you'd like to help out. She can use assistance Friday afternoon to help set up, Saturday and Sunday to staff the area, and Sunday afternoon to tear down. See our Volunteer Page for the benefits you receive as a NML&WF volunteer.
Sweater Show 2008If you haven't made a sweater yet, now's the time! This year our main competitive event will be a show of sweaters on Saturday. We're using part of Wikepedia's definition of sweaters, "a relatively heavy shirt intended to cover the torso and arms of a human body." We're askign that each contestant enter each sweater on a hanger so it can be displayed to its best advantage. We will hang the show in the morning, so be sure to drop off your sweater by 10 am (pick it up again after 5 pm). The show will officially open for voting by people's choice at noon. Knitted, crochet, woven, felted--all are welcome! Prizes will be awarded in the following categories, with a junior division included for youth 16 and under:
Felted Bag Show 200754 wonderful and wooly felted bags were entered in the 2007 Felted Bag Show. They were mostly knit, but other techniques were represented as well. The winners were selected by popular vote:
Just a few of this year's entries in the Felted Bag Show And the winners are:
Registration requested, so we can be sure to have enough volunteers to hang the show. Special Event Registration Form. Super Silly Spinning ChallengeThis will be our Third Annual Super Silly Spinning Challenge, and we've decided to up the challenge. Contestants will be asked to spin wool roving as usual, and then perhpas cotton from cotton balls, Tencel, dryer lint, or whatever interesting fiber those of you with creative minds suggest. Email your suggestions to our Hospitality Chair, Teresa Harrison, at 989 642 8895 or tkh25@joimail.com. Our Second Annual Super Silly Spinning Challenge was just as fun as the first one we did. The spinners worked just one minute under each set of conditions. The results are:
For those of you unfamiliar with this event, the contestants spun Romney roving provided by Stonehedge Fiber Mill for one minute normally, then one minute with latex household gloves on, then one minute blindfolded! It's surprisingly easy to do, and fun for all. Congratulations, ladies, and we hope lots more go into training for the third annual SSSC! Charity Knit-InAll Day Saturday and SundayBring your needles or use ours; bring your stash (machine-washable yarns only, please!) or use ours, and make 4-inch squares to be assembled into scarves and donated to a women's shelter. Bright and colorful, or soft and subtle--lift your spirits while you knit, and the spirits of those sheltering from domestic violence! You can knit in the Hospitality Area while taking a break from classes, demos, shows, and, of course, shopping; or you can knit squares ahead of time and bring them in. If you have machine-washable yarns, suitable for scarves, that you'd like to donate, bring it to Hospitality any time during the festival. Registration not required--just drop in and knit! Guild DisplaysAll Day Saturday and Sunday or as Scheduled with HospitalityShow off your fiber talents, guilds! Get your members to dig out their best (or worst!) projects, with or without a theme, and bring them to the Festival to display. Your guild is responsible for bringing the items, arranging and watching the display during the festival, and tearing it down. The buildings are locked at night. There's no fee, but space is limited, so contact Teresa at 989 642 8895 or tkh25@joimail.com to reserve your spot as soon as possible. DemonstrationsAs Scheduled with Hospitality2007 saw several demonstrations: The Au Sable / Manistee Fiber Guild did a "fiber to fashion" demonstration using both a 4-shaft floor loom and a rigid heddle loom. Members of the Lake Charlevoix Area Weavers Guild did a demonstration of using a "trapeze", as designed by Kati Reeder Meek, to beam a warp onto a loom. And Janine Diebel of Gaylord did a demonstration of bobbin lacemaking. If you or your guild are interested in putting on an educational demonstration, contact Teresa Harrison, at 989 642 8895 or tkh25@joimail.com, to reserve a time slot. |
